About The Festival

Every year in the last weekend of July in Boksburg, a suberb of Johannasburg, there takes place an incredible festival that is without doubt a hidden gem for percussionists the world over. Bringing together over eighty marimba and steel bands from all over southern Africa, Joan Lithgow and her team, comprising her son Brad, daughter Amy, husband Ian, Education Africa and countless volunteers and contributors create the most amazing music atmosphere you could hope to find anywhere. Teachers and arrangers give their time and energy to making sure children and young people from the very poorest to most affluent areas of Africa share their music and support each other, year after year. It truly is the most wonderful example of humanity and community.

The standard of performance is extraordinary at times, bring out all the African rhythms, whether to a traditional song form, a pop song or a classical arrangement.
