Foundation and Key Stage 1
The African workshop for this age group focuses on simple rhythms and phrasing from the Mandinka region of West Africa. In the session we do role play games, sound effects, dancing and ensemble jungle drumming on authentic African djembes, doun douns, bells and shekeres. A physical workout that’s great fun for all.
Key Stage 2
For the Juniors there are currently two options. Firstly, as with the infants, a look at djembe drumming and West African music in general. Challenging rhythms and phrases are taught and layered on various instruments to create an exciting piece of music. The second option is the Shona marimba music of Zimbabwe which fuses African drumming with the sound of the marimba and xylophone, adding an irresistable tuned element to the overall sound.
