Quotes about 'Teaching World Music'

“Teaching World Music” is an invaluable, user-friendly guide for flexible percussion ensemble which creates foot-tapping rhythms from around the world.  It is bursting with inspiring and fun ideas which can be used again and again by specialist and non-specialist teachers, for classroom ensembles, cross-curricular projects and concert items. Jim’s effective way of using words to create energetic and up-lifting rhythms will leave the children wanting more!"

Claire Peplar, Head of Lower School Music, Dulwich Prep School, Kent.

"After our first visit, I was inspired to start up a school samba band, which has been running successfully for 5 years. It is not easy to find resources suitable for Primary School level, and I feel that “Teaching World Music” has something for every teacher, whether they are an experienced music specialist, or a non-specialist class teacher."

Vicki Henderson, Music Teacher, Western CE Primary, Hampshire.

"Teaching World Music’ provides my staff with a training resource that offers a very realistic picture of what can be achieved with our current stock of musical instruments. After the Inset training session with Jim, teachers expressed clearly to me that their confidence had grown…and I could see it happening during the session too. I would recommend this book and training wholeheartedly, both as enhancing music provision and as a teambuilding exercise as well.”

C. Reece, Head Teacher,  Whytemead First School, West Sussex

“What an achievement, well done, I wish I'd had something like this to help when I was teaching!

Each time Jim Bernardin visits, he inspires our children with his World Music Workshops as he transports them into musical experiences from Africa, India, Japan to the Carribean, masterfully creating atmospheres of cultures many have previously not experienced. From Foundation Stage to Key Stage 2 in workshops, it is a joy to see each child contributing to an exciting finale through simple rhythms and ostinati developing into a whole 'team' performance, co-ordinated with Jim's own warm and encouraging personality. It is an amazing experience! The whole school 'showcase' at the end leaves teachers with a wish to develop skills further in the classroom.

His book, CD of 68 tracks and training package, will offer opportunities for specialist and non specialist alike to do just that, as he shares his knowledge and expertise through simple progressive stages, also showing how 'existing' classroom instruments can be incorporated into different styles and cultures. Inspirational, great fun and an invaluable tool!”

Janet Ayre, St Margaret's C.E. Primary School, Angmering

Hi Jim!

Received your new book a couple of days ago and decided that it would be great to try out some of the ideas as an end of SATS week treat with Year 6 - which we did this morning.  We used the Marching Band section and learnt the 3 rhythms then took the instruments out into the playground and marched up and down the playground playing as loud as we could!  We dared my classroom assistant to lead the class down the front driveway and up the lane through the village and then right back through the centre of the school past everyone's classrooms!  It was brilliant!  Thanks for the inspiration, the class can't wait to try out a few more idease before you come in at the start of July!

The rest of the school didn't know quite what to make of it!!!  The children are now completely exhausted and flopped in front of a DVD eating sticky buns!!!

Thought you'd like some feedback!

Clare Farrell, Deputy Headteacher, Ropley CE Primary School
