Foundation and Key Stage 1
For Foundation and Year 1 this workshop offers the children a close-up look inside one of the world’s most fascinating instruments. The children are played well known songs and nursery rhythms, encouraged to sing along, try the pans themselves, and finish the workshop with some fun drumming based on a simple calypso rhythm.
For Year Two there is the opportunity to go one step further and learn a simple chord progression and movement on the pans enabling them to sound just like a Caribbean steel band. Other percussion instruments are added to the mix so that everyone can play.
Key stage 2
The students in key stage 2 are taught the basics of Reggae, Calypso and Soca rhythms as well as two, three and four chord progressions on the steel pans. Added to this is a range of unpitched Caribbean percussion. By the end of the session your class will sound like a professional steel band! All the children have a chance to play on the pans as well as all the other traditional instruments.
